This September. Let’s Play! Playing Spaces is an exciting opportunity to experience multiple theatre spaces over the course of one evening. Flashback will utilize it’s unique Black Box theater, a flexible performing space, to teach performers the many different ways you can stage a scene. By attending this workshop, participants can expect to expand their vocabulary and knowledge of different types of stages. The workshop will take place on Saturday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Black Box at Flashback Theater.

Flashback Theater is no stranger to versatile theater spaces. The company has produced productions in arena, thrust, profile, and proscenium spaces. Each of these spaces requires different techniques from actors and production teams, but the basic concepts of theatre staging always apply. Workshop leader, Steve Cleberg, says, “Each theatre space has its own geography. And while there are a set of rules that govern each space, an overall understanding of theatre performance and the ability to apply common sense practices can help an actor to make the adjustment from one space to another.”

“Most actors have the basic rules of the traditional proscenium arch theatre as a part of their tool kit.” Says Cleberg, “I find that the inexperienced actor often has an easier time adjusting to the arena or thrust stages because the traditional rules that guide their instincts are not entrenched. However, once the adjustments are made, I think all actors love the new freedom that comes from performing in a non-traditional space.”

Participants in the workshop can expect to get on their feet to work in each different type of setup. Flashback’s Black Box is a flexible theater space, meaning there are no set rules for where the playing space and the audience space exist. During the course of the workshop, the space will be rearranged. Then, actors will have the chance to work in the space and discover the unique challenges presented by each.

As always, the Let’s Play! program strives to promote a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Actors of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to participate. All that is needed to enjoy a Let’s Play! workshop is a collaborative spirit and a willingness to say “yes!” If you’re unsure, or you just want to watch, we encourage your attendance as an audience member. Everyone is welcome in the theater!
