Play Improv Games With The Let’s Play! Company

The Let’s Play! Company at Flashback Theater hosts Second Saturday improv games each month, continuing this weekend on Saturday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m.  Second Saturday Host Brian Hermann and the Company will guide participants through each game.

Those who have participated in theater know the rush of joy and adrenaline that is felt when you perform a scene exceptionally well.  In improv, you get the opportunity to build something with each other over and over, making it better every time. The audience will see the improvements throughout the night, and jokes new at the start of the night become an inside joke for everyone in the room by the end. This unadulterated joy felt by both parties is part of the Second Saturday workshops. While participants entertain themselves by acting out scenes, audience members are also entertained by seeing the different situations that are presented to them.

Bailey Patterson, a member of the Company, says that she thoroughly enjoys the improv workshops, especially when she makes the audience members laugh. “When I hear them laugh, it gives me a feeling that I accomplished something. My goal with doing improv is to entertain myself while entertaining others. Making people laugh is a sign that I met my goal.”

Company members are of all ages and backgrounds, and share a common interest: theater. Their main goal is to bring theater to everyone in the community in a relaxed, entertaining manner. In the workshops, participants take part in improvisation games that enhance creativity, and those who wish to watch are entertained. A perfect performance isn’t the goal; the key aspect of each workshop is to make theater accessible to everyone without putting stress on participants. Both participants and audience members alike will strengthen their creative muscles while relaxing and enjoying each other’s company.

Whether we realize it or not, improvisation has been a huge part of everyone’s lives. From the popular childhood experience of playing pretend to participating in important conversations, using the brain to make on-the-spot choices is familiar to all of us. At Second Saturday workshops, the concept of improvisation is expanded upon in an enjoyable way.
