Flashback Theater Co. will present a two day design intensive on March 27th and 28th, 2026. 

Participants will choose to take either a Set Design or Costume Design track and move through a mock design process. They will start by reading and analyzing a script and communicating with a director, and then move through finding inspiration, design research, practical skills for creating a design, and will conclude with a mock design presentation. Guest Artists Ron Kidd and Haley Hutchins will provide instruction, feedback, and examples of their work as professional Designers in theater while Sommer Schoch, FbTC Producing Artistic Director, highlights a director’s perspective and ensures participants learn how to work as a part of a cohesive production team.

Scholarships and payment plans are offered through the registration process.

About the Artists

Ron Kidd

Ron earned a Masters Degree in Theatre and Secondary Education from Morehead State
University, KY, in 1971 with additional studies at Southern Illinois and Syracuse Universities.
During his 12 year tenure at Linton High School as a Drama/Speech/English teacher, he
designed sets, lights, built and directed plays and musical productions for The Plaza Players,
Cotton Hollow Summer Theater and Schenectady Light Opera.
From 1983 till 2011, Ron pursued a professional theatrical career as a New York City based
actor/stage manager. He performed Off Broadway in The Fantasticks and made his Broadway
debut at the Palace Theatre in The Will Rogers Follies in 1992. Sandwiched between roles in the
National Tours, Kidd returned to his birth town of Somerset to design lighting for the Somerset
Community College production of The Fiddler on the Roof, which opened The Center for Rural
Development in 1996 and sets for Arsenic and Old Lace and The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wilde.
Set and lighting design for SCC’s Stoner Theatre include: The Good Doctor, You’re A Good Man,
Charlie Brown
, and Steel Magnolias. Kidd directed and designed for productions of Annie Jr.;
Our Town and All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten at the W.B. Jones Auditorium
for Briar Patch Players in Somerset.
Flashback Theater design projects include: Nightmare on Backstreet; Sweeney Todd and Little Shop of Horrors.

Haley Hutchins

Haley Hutchins is a theatre professor and costume designer based out of Campbellsville, KY. She has previously designed shows such as She Loves Me, The Mousetrap, and the Scottish play, just to name a few. When she’s not teaching or costuming, she spends her time with her family, knitting, or going on walks. She is so excited to be a part of the masterclass series at Flashback!
