Flashback Theater Co. kicks off their 2025-26 season with Getting and Spending by Michael Chepiga, running October 16-26, 2025. The play had its original run at Broadway’s Helen Hayes theater in 1998. Flashback will produce the play in their intimate storefront space in downtown Somerset. The plot focuses on Victoria, an investment banker using stolen funds to build homes for the homeless. Caught in the midst of a cutthroat trial, she travels to a Kentucky monastery. There, she plans to pull the foremost defense attorney of her era out of retirement. She must convince him to help her prove to the world: the ends justify the means. Single tickets for Getting and Spending are now on sale. Purchase tickets during regular box office hours Tuesday – Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. by calling Flashback or visiting 209 E Mount Vernon Street.
About the Story
“Getting and Spending has been sitting on my shelf for quite a few years.” says director Sommer Shoch, “The first time I read it, I was intrigued by this character that did something so evidently wrong, presumably for the right reasons. It fits right into this season of moral quandaries and I am excited to work on those questions in rehearsal.” Schoch feels that now is the perfect time to engage the community with a play that questions the intersection of morals vs ethics: “This play presents all sides by challenging assumptions, which is what gives this story heart. It will make you consider your own perspective, and what might change it.”
Fans of judicial drama will love the high stakes drama of the play, which culminates in an all out courtroom scene with two lawyers arguing in front of a judge. Other audience members will love the plays’ reflections of real life Kentucky history. In the play, attorney Richard O’Neill has retired to a monastery in the invented town of Jeffreysville, Kentucky. While this setting is fictional, it takes clear inspiration from the real life Abbey of Gethsemani, a trappist monastery located just outside Bardstown that was once home to famous American monk, Thomas Merton.
About the Venue
Flashback Theater will produce this production in their intimate storefront space at 209A East Mt Vernon St.. Flashback produced their sold out production of When We Get Good Again in this space last season. Schoch is excited about the opportunity the intimate space poses to bring audiences into the drama: “The intimate atmosphere of this production will draw you in and the characters will make you care about how the systems that run our world clash, creating conundrums and loopholes that conflict with the good they are supposed to do.”
Cast and Crew
The play features an all-star cast of returning Flashback actors including Brian Herrmann, Billy Christopher Maupin, Zachary Vaught, Bailey Patterson, Seth Hart, Joy Chaney, and Laura Torres. Joining Schoch on the production team are stage manager Josh West and costume designer Traci Bray.
